While it may be emotionally difficult, seeking medical attention is very important for certain types of crime, especially sexual and physical abuse and assault. It is possible to have injuries or infections that you cannot see or feel that could be life-threatening if not treated in a timely manner. For your safety, call your doctor or go to the emergency room as soon as possible. Emergency room personnel can contact a local rape crisis or victim service provider for you. A Counselor Advocate will help explain your rights as a victim within the medical system and the legal system. They will provide crisis counseling, emotional support, and information and review your legal and medical options with you. You do not have to go through this alone.
If you are a victim of sexual assault:
- Avoid bathing, eating, drinking, and changing your clothes before going to the hospital. Crucial information may be lost if you do.
- Your clothes may be collected as evidence. Therefore, have a friend or family member bring a change of clothes and shoes for you to wear home if possible.
- Remember, seeking medical attention does not automatically mean criminal charges will be filed with the police. However, seeking medical attention immediately may preserve evidence if charges are filed.
- Emergency Room personnel can contact a local rape crisis or victim service provider to be with you. Counselor Advocates will provide crisis counseling and support; explain what will happen during the forensic exam including your rights, and review steps in the legal process including your rights. They will also provide information about emergency contraception, follow-up counseling and Crime Victim Compensation.
For child victims of sexual and physical abuse, seeking medical attention is just as important as it is for adults. Due to a child's unique needs, in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, there are two Child Advocacy Centers (CAC's) that have experts trained in working with abused children. These experts have additional knowledge of pediatric growth and development. Forensic interviewing and examinations are tailored to meet children's developmental needs. Child Advocacy Centers are located at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh. If a child discloses they have been a victim of sexual or physical abuse, CVVC recommends contacting one of these CAC's. If you cannot get to a CAC or if the child has severe injuries, take the child to the nearest medical facility for necessary medical attention.
