1. February 13.10, WellWoman Radio Retreat TM
- Topic: Black History Month: Well Children
- Guest: Sandy Lynne Holman, author, Grandpa, Is Everything Black Bad?
- Grandpa, Is Everything Black Bad? is a wonderfully illustrated story of an African American boy, Montsho, who questions the goodness of his black skin because he sees so many black things in his life that are bad; bad guys on TV wear black, black cats bring bad luck, people wear black to funerals, etc. Montsho then learns of his proud heritage from his Grandfather whose wise words and magical drum create visions of ancient Africa in the boys imagination. Through a mystical journey, Montsho learns to identify himself with his heritage and, ultimately, to appreciate his beautiful skin.
Ms. Holman received her M.S. degree in School Counseling from California State University, Sacramento in 1991. She is the director of the Culture C.O.-O.P., www.cultureco-op.com an organization aimed at assisting those who are working with diversity in education, business and the community.
Sandy's experiences as a counselor, prevention coordinator and consultant for the past several years have given her a practicioner's insight into the challenges diverse communities and organizations are facing and a strong commitment to advocacy for children.
Sandy was inspired to write this story following her experiences with children in schools. Some of the African American children would comment on how much they disliked the color black and their own dark skin. Sandy dedicates this book to those and other children and to the memory of her grandparents, Rufus and Willie Lee.
